"Nepal is there to change you, not for you to change it. Lose yourself in its essence. Make your footprints with care and awareness of the
precarious balance around you. Nepal is not only a place on the map, but an experience, a way of life from which we all can learn."
Stephen Bezruchka - A Guide to Trekking in Nepal.
Travel Insurance
Discover Nepal requires you sign up for travel insurance that covers your trip for every eventuality. The insurance should cover for baggage, personal possessions as well as sickness liability. You also need insurance to cover yourself for the possibility of medical evacuation by helicopter, especially if you are participating in a Grade C or D trek.. Helicopter rescue is not common but it does occur, particularly if you develop acute mountain sickness and immediate descent does not improve your situation.
There is a wide variety of travel insurance available. Make sure you thoroughly understand the policy as it may exclude certain activities, such as trekking or may include restrictions on elevation. It is a good idea to explore one that provides complete travel insurance. Many reputable agencies offer complete travel insurance at reasonable costs. Such complete travel insurance policies are often a good value for your money.
You may also consider shopping around for a policy which pays directly to medical and emergency evacuation services. This eliminates you having to pay up front and sorting through the process to claim later. If you have to claim later, make sure you keep all the documentation. Claims can't be settled based on your word. Be sure to fully investigate if your travel insurance agency requires you to call back upon arrival back in your home country to determine whether all conditions were met before the claim can be fulfilled.
Don't forget to disclose, any expensive personal possessions that you may take with you (e.g. camera equipment). You should also disclose any significant past medical history, before you leave the country, as we are all too aware of horror stories concerning travelers who did not. Companies who provide this sort of complete insurance package, advertise in adventure travel magazines.
Please be aware that your insurance is your own responsibility. Discover Nepal does not offer travel insurance but recommends World Nomads.
